A couple of days ago a customer has brought a broken 500Gb USB-drive that he had bought in a Chinese store across the river, for an insanely low price. But the drive was not working: if you, say, save a movie onto the drive, playing the saved movie back resulted in replaying just the last 5 minutes of the film.

This is partly because of a system of residence permits, called hukou, that resembles the pass system in South Africa under apartheid. People with a city hukou can live and work there freely. Those with a rural hukou can come to a city only as guest workers. Some 150m rural Chinese work in cities without the right to live there, in effect making them foreigners in their own country. They often cannot use public schools and clinics, and they are barred from public housing. Peasants who protest can be deported back to the countryside.

Why Are Chinese Millionaires So Stingy?

A good read. Some interesting points.

First, China’s wealthy are relatively young, still in the acquisitive stages of their lives. The average age of China’s millionaires is 39. Second, it is virtually impossible to become wealthy in today’s China without being corrupt and ruthless, and corrupt and ruthless folk are usually not inclined to dispose of their ill-gotten gains. China’s rich, according to one estimate, are sitting on $1.4 trillion in dirty money. Third, many aspects of Chinese culture discourage giving to help others. “You sweep the snow only in front of your own porch,” goes a well-known saying.

Just finished reading - 11 Amazing Fake ‘Harry Potter’ Books Written In China.

How amazing even Harry Porter has its own fake version in China. The authors sometimes just replace original characters from other books with Harry Porter’s characters and give it a new title. There’s really a market for this.

A few interesting Harry Porter fakes.

According to the translated excerpt I found, , the author took the text of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” and replaced the character names with names from the Harry Potter universe. Except for Gandalf — he remains and joins forces with the Potter crew. Here’s a passage, full on [SIC] in advance:

There was a hobbit, who didn’t even know how to return home. He lived in a hole in the ground, and didn’t know where he came from or where he was going to. He even didn’t know why he had become a hobbit. This was Hogwartz School of Witchcraft and Wizardry 5th year apprentice Harry Potter.
